When children count the fish and move them in slots with the correct numerals on the boards, they get a clear understanding of the quantity-number name-number symbol association. Take all the fish and all the numerals out. Show the child how to select any one board and place it on top of the shelf. Show the child how to place the fish in the slots and locate the number for the slot so as to place it there.
Take all the boards and arrange in order. Show the child how to count while putting the fish in starting from 1. Put one fish in. Put 1 in the numeral slot. Then for board number 2, move the first fish to the second board and add one more. Most children are fairly aware of the number sequence 1 to 10 through the previous toy or know it by rote. This activity clearly gives the correlation between number and quantity by adding one more at each stage.
Ask the child to keep the fish on a tray in another room. Arrange all numerals in front of you. Pull out any one, and ask the child to identify. Ask the child to count and bring the corresponding number of fish from the tray. To play independently, show the child how to place an indicator on any numeral and getting corresponding number of fish.
