This sight word game has knights climbing up ladders and falling down the pits in an effort to reach the top of the castle. As children play this funky variation of snakes and ladders, they learn to read all the sight words necessary for reading a simple story book.
Set includes 4 stackable pieces printed with sight words, 4 wooden knights as pawns for the game, 4 wooden ladders, 1 die, 1 flag, 4 marker colour pens and 1 board with sight words printed on them on which we use the marker pen to highlight the words taken by each player.
Size of stacked pieces – 28 cm x 28 cm x 10 cm
Size of Board – 28 cm x 20 cm x 0.6 cm
Once children have learnt the various sight words essential for reading they are ready to form and spell bigger words (See How).
ACTIVITIES
-
Game Play Individual
-
Show the child how to roll the die and move as many steps forward as the die indicates. Then point to the word on which the child lands and read it out aloud, say “from”. Now ask the child to locate "from" on the word list and mark it off. This ensures that the child can now find the word from anywhere and read it

Game Play Multiple
-
The same game played by more than one child. In this variation children take turns and play by turn. The children can move off the square they are on when they have read the word. They each have a word list and besides reaching the top, the children can also check how many words they have collected along the way. Encourage children to enjoy the game and read carefully, rather than have a single minded focus of reaching the top.
